Admission: Procedures, Eligibility, Pre and Post-requisites

 

Eligibility for Admission to First Year of the Degree Course

 

You should have passed the Senior School Certificate Examination (class XII) of the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi, or an examination recognized as equivalent by the University of Delhi, held in 2009.

In exceptional cases , students who have passed class XII in earlier years may be considered for admission on providing valid reason and submission of proof for the gap years.

Where grades are given in School, transfer of grades to marks will be in accordance with the norms of Association of Indian Universities.

You should possess a minimum percentage of marks in your last qualifying examination as prescribed by the University of Delhi and stated in the Information Bulletin containing the Common Pre-Admission Form.

For admission to Gargi College, you should qualify within the notified cut-off percentages (including subject weightage) after taking into account negative weightage for certain subjects as declared by the college.

Selection to some courses is made through an Entrance test and /or interview.

Rounding off a fraction of a mark is not permissible.

 

Admission to Science Courses:

Aggregate will include only science subjects. Please see relevant pages for details.

 

Admission to courses in Humanities and Commerce:

Aggregate will be based on Best Four subjects, which will include one language plus three electives. For admission to any course, the eligible cut-offs will vary for different streams taken in class XII (viz. Arts, Commerce and Science). For all B.A. Hons. Courses, there will be an additional pre-requisite of minimum cut-off in the subject of specialisation and/or in language.

 

Hindi medium students are admitted to the courses, if eligible. However, the medium of instruction is English in almost all courses except B.A.(Hons.)Political Science, where it may be in Hindi also.

 

The college will display minimum cut off percentages of Class XII aggregate marks for each course on days prescribed by the University and as given under Admission Schedule of this prospectus.

 

How to Apply

Ø Common pre-admission form of the University of Delhi will be accepted as Gargi college does not have its own pre-admission form. The college and the course code must be entered and the candidate must show proof of having submitted it within the stipulated deadline.

Ø On being eligible for admission to Gargi College as per the college criteria, you may fill the College Admission form on prescribed days of admission and submit it alongwith the following documents.

The following are to be submitted in original alongwith a set of attested photocopies*. The original certificates will be returned after verification on the day of admission.

 

Documents Required for Admission

 

  1. Date of Birth Certificate (Class X Marksheet).
  2. Certificate of the last examination passed.
  3. Marksheet of the last examination passed.
  4. Character Certificate from the school/college last attended.
  5. College leaving/Migration Certificate wherever necessary.
  6. Certificate of having passed a Board or Class VIII Examination in Hindi (if exemption  from Compulsory test in Hindi is sought).
  7. Relevant Caste certificate (including OBC non-creamy layer), Disability certificate and certificate from Armed Forces,whichever applicable, in case admission is sought in reserved category.
  8. Medical Fitness and Participation Certificates for admission on sports basis.
  9. Participation Certificates for Extra-Curricular Activities for admission on ECA quota.
  10. 1 Stamp-sized photograph to be affixed on the admission form.
  11. Copy of OMR form
  12. Copy of receipt of prospectus of this college.
  13. A photocopy of the Common Pre-Admission form must be submitted alongwith the college form

 

*Self-attested copies will be accepted. It is made clear that if any false attestation/falsified records are detected, the student will be debarred from attending any course in the University or its college(s) for next five years and in addition, a criminal case under relevant sections of IPC (viz. 470, 471, 474 IPC etc.) will be instituted against her to subject her to the requisite criminal proceeding.

Ø      The last date is 16th October 2009 for Inter-University migration and 31st December 2009 for Inter -College Migration.

Ø      The last date for change of subject is 16th October 2009.

Ø      If you are applying for M.A./M.Sc.Course, you must in addition register yourself with the Dean of the Faculty concerned at the South Delhi Campus.

 

 

Provisional Admission

Candidates who are unable to produce any of the certificates required for admission, because their University / Board has not issued the same till the last date of admission, will be given provisional admission till 14th  August, 2009 by which date they are required to submit all the relevant certificates.

 

The candidates must bring their parents/guardians at the time of admission for signing the admission form in presence of the teacher in charge of admissions.

 

 

Negative Weightage for Certain Subjects of Class XII

 

·        Out of the Best Four subjects, only one of the following from the academic stream listed in the Information Bulletin of the University of Delhi, may be included:

      Engineering Drawing, Home Science, Fine Arts, Agriculture, Physical Education,

      Music, Dance.

·        The college reserves the right to add or to delete from the above list.

      Where one of these is part of the Best Four, there will be a negative weightage, that is, a deduction of 4% will be made from the aggregate for purpose of eligibility.

·        No subject from the Vocational Stream will be considered for inclusion in the Best Four for the following courses: Honours in Humanities subjects and B.Com Honours.

·        B.A.(Prog.): In Best Four only one of the above mentioned subjects OR only one subject from the Vocational Stream (as listed in the University bulletin) may be included. In either case a negative weightage of 4% will be accorded. Please note that seats in certain discipline options are limited and will be offered on first-come-first-served basis. Mathematics in Class XII is a prerequisite for the following discipline options : Economics, Operational Research and Mathematics. It however need not be part of Best Four.

·        B.Com (Hons.): Mathematics in Class XII is a pre-requisite, though it may not be part of Best Four. For Commerce stream only the following subjects may be included in Best Four: Economics, Mathematics, Accountancy, Business Studies, Computer Science, Informatics Practices. In all other cases, including other streams, cut-offs will be higher for eligibility.

·        B.Com: Only one of the negative weightage subjects OR only one subject in the “Commerce- based Group” of the Vocational Stream will be included in Best Four. Cutoffs will be higher for students of Science and Humanities streams of Class XII.

 

Admission under different Quotas

OBC Candidates

For admission under OBC category, the candidate must submit the cast certificate (non-creamy layer). The  criteria of creamy layer is applicable as per norms of Government of India.

 

Caste certificate must be in the name of the applicant.

 

ADMISSION ON THE BASIS OF EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (ECA)

 

1.      ECA SELECTION TRIALS AND INTERVIEWS: 3rd and 4th July 2009

2.      ON THE SPOT REGISTRATION: 9am to 10am

3.      TRIALS & INTERVIEW: 10am to 2pm.

4.      RESULT: 6th July 2009, 11:00am

5.      ADMISSION:

 

  • You will be considered only if you have relevant training, participation and achievement in the various categories of extra-curricular activities.
  • You will be considered for admission only after Selection Trials and Interview.
  • Failure to participate actively in the cultural life of the college will lead to cancellation of admission.

PLEASE NOTE:

 

§         There is no separate form for eca admission.

§         Apart from the above mentioned documents required for admission, certificates verifying the student’s extra-curricular proficiency should be brought in original and attested photocopy of the same.

§         The student will be judged on the basis of on spot ability, past record, training and experience.

§         On the spot registration with a fee of Rs. 125/- per society auditioned.

§         Students must carry their own instruments, CDs, Props etc.

§         Music system would be provided.

§         Languages skills where applicable.

§         Students to come in appropriate costumes and perform.

§         Should be ready with a 2-3 minute performance for dance and music societies(for western dance a fusion of Hindi & English western)

§         For Hindi debating, Hindi compulsory upto 10th and for English debating, English upto 12th (Please carry marksheet)

§         For Photography society, no Photoshop is allowed. Bring your portfolio (atleast 7-8 pictures) either in print or a soft copy on a pen drive or a CD.

Admission on the Basis of Sports

  •  Selection trials would be held on 16th June’09 from 9.30 a.m. onwards. Candidates should report at 9.00 a.m. And fill up a registration form. Photocopies of academic and sports certificates should also be attached.
  • Candidates with original certificates and copies attested by the school principal and issuing authority of Inter Zonal, State, National and / or International level in the games relevant to the college only will be considered.
  • Certificates of only last three years would be considered.
  • Names of shortlisted candidates after selection trials would be displayed on the notice board in the evening. Only shortlisted candidates are required to report for interview the next day.
  • If selected, a medical certificate from a reputed hospital besides a medical check-up in the college and is mandatory. Any candidate failing the check-up would not be granted admission.
  • An undertaking on an Rs. 10/- stamp paper needs to be submitted regarding regularity in attendance, in sports a s well as academics.
  • Irregularity in attendance would result in penalties, cancellation of admission or detention from taking University examination, depending on the magnitude of default.

 

 

Fees : Payment and Refund

 

  • You will be deemed admitted only after you have paid the college fees.
  • The fees is to be paid in Cash/Demand Draft/Pay Order at the State Bank of India Extension Counter inside the college premises between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. No cheques will be accepted.
  • All students have to pay the full fees. Needy students may subsequently apply for financial assistance from the college welfare fund. Supporting documents must be enclosed. The college will put up a notice seeking applications in August.
  • If you do not pay the above within the specified period your admission is liable to be cancelled.
  • Cancellation of Admission

No withdrawal other than through the prescribed form of the college will be considered for fee refund.

    • Upto 31st July, 09 – full refund of fee.
    • Between 1st July to 14th Aug, 09 – full fee minus Rs. 35/-.
    • After 14th Aug, 09 – No fee refund.

Fee refund will be considered only through the prescribed withdrawal  form of the college

 

Post-Admission Modalities

  •  If you have not passed Hindi in class VIII at school, a Compulsory test in Hindi conducted by the University, is required to be given by you. Please give your name to the college office when the college reopens.
  •  For each course there is a University Examination at the end of each academic year. Promotion to the next class will be in accordance with university rules.
  •  The University examination form has to be filled in by every student by mid-September 2009, failing which she will not be permitted to take the annual examination.
  •  The student may at all time carry stamp-sized photographs for use in college ID card and library membership card and examination form.

 

Rules on Ragging

 

Ragging is strictly prohibited and will invite suspension from college as well as registration of the complaint with the police. An inspection squad will be doing the rounds and noting down the names of the offenders. First year students facing offensive ragging may immediately report the matter to the Students’ Union office bearers, Faculty Advisors or the Principal.

 

As per Supreme Court orders Ragging is a punishable offense

 

Attendance Requirements

 

Gargi College strictly follows the ordinance laid down by the University of Delhi on

attendance requirement as prerequisite for taking the annual examination. No concession will be granted to anyone on any grounds. Hence admission seekers and their guardians are requested to please make of a note of this. The University ordinance is as follows :

  • All classes will commence on 16th July 2009.
  • Attendance will be marked from the above mentioned date.
  • Compulsory attendance of 66.6% is required in the total of all Honours/Concurrent/Practicals/Tutorial Classes as per rules laid down by the University of Delhi. Those who fail to secure the mandatory attendance will be DETAINED in the final examination.
  • You are not allowed to join any additional course/job during college hours.
  • All short of attendance will be available with course/department in – charge at eh beginning of the second and third terms.  Individual letters will not be sent.
  • Medical Certificates/reports with the prescribed medical leave application form (available in the college office) should be submitted within a week of rejoining college after illness, duly signed by the subject teachers. Certificates submitted late will not be accepted.

 

Admission seekers who have health problems that may require timely medical intervention are requested to ask for and fill in, a special medical card and submit separately.  Details will be available in college notice board on days of admission.

 

No concession in attendance will be granted to anyone on any grounds.

Internal Assessment

25% of the marks of each paper is for internal assessment, which includes:

  • Assignments & Projects / Presentations / Terms Papers / Seminars = 10%
  • House Examination to be held in January 2009 =10%
  • Attendance as per the following slab stipulated by the university = 5%.
  • At the end of the third term, the total attendance for the year is to be calculated, the % taken out and marks awarded as follows:

v     More than 67% but less than 70% 1/5 or 0.8/4 or 0.4/2*

v     70% or more but less than 75% 2/5 or 1.6/4 or 0.8/2

v     75% or more but less than 80% 3/5 or 2.4/4 or 1.2/2

v     80% or more but less than 85% 4/5 or 3.2/4 or 1.6/2

v     85% and above 5/5 or 4/4 or 2/2

The denominator in each case represents the marks for attendance for 100 marks, 75 marks and 50 marks paper, respectively.

These marks will be awarded for attendance over and above the University requirement of 67%.

 

 

FEES

The following is the total fees for Ist year, in the respective courses, to be paid in full at the time of admission.  Admission cannot be deemed as granted till fees are paid. Payment may be in cash or through PO/DD in the name of “The Principal, Gargi College” to be deposited at the counter of State Bank of India in the college premises. No cheques will be accepted. Fees are subject to change in case of revision by the University of Delhi.
