Book Discussion: The Social Context of Learning in India: Achievement Gaps and Factors of Poor Learning

The session aimed to explore the various socio-economic factors affecting education in India and discuss potential solutions to bridge the learning gap. Our esteemed panel, Prof. Bharati Baveja, Prof.Arvind Kumar Misra and Dr Divya Padalia discussed  learning in educational settings in the specific

Indian context from a theoretically rigorous perspective but also provided

methodological insights for classroom-based research.

 

Personal Growth and Horizon

18.03.2025

This interactive session on ‘Personal Growth and Horizon’, was a reflexive journey by Ms Nidhi. She is a Gargi B El Ed alumna (2002 batch), educator, and founder, Crafter’s Quest. She narrated situations of her life with awareness of ‘self’ and the opportunities she created for herself, and the skills she gained through B El Ed. Students raised questions on their predicaments and the session ended on a positive note.

 

Theatre Workshop

31.01.2025

A workshop on reading of text - poetry, prose and anecdotes in the works of Punjabi writers such as Mohan Rakesh, Bhishm Sahani, Krishna Sobti, Agyeya, and Yashpal was organised with the help of Mr. Lokesh Jain for 1st year students. The theme of the workshop was violence in our lives. Dramatised readings and discussions was lead by Raza Haider, Prof. Apoorvanand,  Alka Ranjan and Poorva Bhardwaj. 

Workshop on Children’s Books

06.02.2025

Ms. Neha Singh, author and gender activist, was invited on 6 February 2025 to meet 2nd-year students to share her stories, poems and essays for children. Neha shared her views on

what it means to write for children. Students enjoyed the sense of humour with which Neha

Singh writes to build empathy for LGBTQI characters and women’s rights.

 

Field Visit to Innovative Centres of Education

05.02.2025 

The 3rd-year students visited Nai Talim School called Anand Niketan at Wardha Ashram, Sewagram, Maharashtra. They observed and experienced a work-based curriculum of education. The emphasis is given on learning day-to-day life skills and crafts. It integrates physical work and the intellectual work for a new social order and also for efficient learning as ‘learning by doing’. This Nai Talim School is recognised by NCERT as a ‘Heritage School’.

 

10.02.2025 

Mirambika Free Progress School, Aurobindo AshramAurobindo Ashram campus. Students had the unique opportunity to have extended stay on the ashram campus beyond the school timings and had the benefit of interaction with teachers of Mirambika, and participated in the ashram routine.

 

Pratisandi Foundation

25.02.2025

A four-hour workshop on classroom safeguarding was conducted, which aimed at creating a safe and inclusive learning environment for students. The session was facilitated by 6 facilitators from Pratisandi NGO, who specialize in creating awareness about child safety, awareness, and mental well-being in classroom contexts and worked with several educational institutions.  The workshop was interactive and included a mix of discussions, activities, and real-life case studies followed by group work and presentations. 

Heritage Walk

13.02.2025

Eighty first-year students from the Department of Elementary Education, Gargi College, University of Delhi, visited the Sangeet Natak Akademi. The tour was part of the Akademi's ongoing educational outreach program, which welcomes students and practitioners of arts and humanities disciplines. The students were accompanied by their theatre faculty, Lokesh Jain, and core faculty member, Dr Prachi Kalra.

3rd year students went for an experiential heritage walk at Mehrauli Archeological Park. It was facilitated by Mr.Zubair Idrisi and Dr Edna Esther Kerketta.

Orientation Session for 4th-year students

The Department organised a placement orientation session with Dr Shivani Sahni, Principal of The Modern School, Greater Faridabad. She talked about the work culture in private schools, desirable attributes of educators, role of art in education, developinging multiple perspectives on children’s world and imagination.

Interactive Session on Children’s Literature in Hindi

20.03.2025

The interaction with Shiraz enabled students to discuss not only the value of stories but also talk about the need for depth and complexity in children’s literature. Shiraz read out his short stories and poems and also shared the stories behind the writing of each piece. Students got a glimpse into a writer’s craft.

Lecture Series on Curriculum Studies for the students of the 3rd and 4th years.

The aim of the lecture series is to bring together scholars, educators, and curriculum designers to critically engage with the intersection of curriculum, the politics of knowledge, and the innovative practices that drive curriculum reform. In this series, Dr Yemuna Sunny spoke on “Curriculum and the Politics of Knowledge”, and we look forward to  lecture sessions with Prof. Anita Rampal, .and Annu Joy.

Round Table on Projects

03.09.2024:

The main speakers of the round table were Dr Latika and Dr Gunjan who discussed the broader scope of IVth year projects and the frameworks that support it. The focus was to brainstorm on ‘how can the framework remain flexible to allow for a wide arena of students’ choice of topics?’ The roundtable was attended by representatives from all the eight B.El.Ed colleges and it helped to exchange ideas, common concerns and possibilities of projects.

This colloquium series was organised in a hybrid mode based on the shared curriculum documents and respective strengths. Four online monthly sessions were organised. They included faculty presentations on B.Ed & B.El.Ed. curriculum and research project presentations by students. The first research colloquium was on the topic, ‘Peace Education in Classrooms’, Presentation by 3 students of 4th yr B El Ed:

Diagnostic Testing and Remedial Measures in Mathematics

26.10.2024

‘Diagnostic Testing and Remedial Measures in Mathematics’ with a focus on Geometry and Arithmetic at the Middle School level was presented by Dr P. Lavanya, Principal, Department of Education, SSSIHL. Ms. G. Lavanya and Ms. K.

Prasanthi, students of the II B.Ed program at SSSIHL,

presented findings on common errors observed in

Middle school students' understanding of arithmetic and geometry classes. 

 

Loss of Language and Identity in Multilingual India

Fiza Gauri and Zarqa Shafi, 4th Yr B El Ed students, presented their research project, ‘Loss of Language and Identity in Multilingual India’. This project is mentored by Dr Chhaya Sawhney. The student presentation is followed by Dr Chhaya Sawhney’s presentation on ‘Multilingualism and its Relevance in Classrooms’, from B.Ed curriculum.

NIPUN Bharat Mission and Learning Reforms in India

Abhinav Ghosh, research scholar at Harvard University, spoke on the

topic, ‘Mission Impossible? NIPUN Bharat and learning reforms in India’ on 2 December,

2024. His presentation examined the focus on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in the

NEP 2020 in the context of both educational policy and its implications for teachers and

classroom pedagogy. B.El.Ed students were able to connect his research with their own

internship experiences in school.

Meditation Session

14.01.2025

 

ASMI organised a meditation session for students. Mrs Neelam, MDNIY, New Delhi, conducted the session in the New Academic Block. It witnessed active participation from students and faculty. The primary aim of the session was to promote mental well-being and to highlight the benefits of meditation for stress management, focus enhancement, and emotional balance. The session included breathing exercises, mindfulness techniques, and body relaxation exercises.Participants reported feeling rejuvenated and inspired to practice meditation regularly.

EDUFEST '24 : SAFARNAMA

EDUFEST '24 : SAFARNAMA
The department of Elementary Education of Gargi college organised its annual departmental fest, Edufest on April 19th 2024. The theme of the event was
"SAFARNAMA". A stimulating discussion with alumni was organised to learn about their experiences and assist us in navigating this life - changing journey of
education. It was a privilege to have such great insights on fields beyond teaching. Our esteemed professors Dr Prachi Kalra and Dr. Chhaya Sawhney delivered an insightful presentation on the topic, Teachers Negotiating Professional Agency: A socio-historical Study of the B.El.Ed program, viewing it from their lens of expertise. T
The music society, Dreamchord, illuminated the stage with their melodic voices as they transported us over India's musical landscape.
Artwave and our photography club added their artistic and visionary touches of magic to curate the Edufest'24. Zeal, our dancing society brought in the wave of energy that lit up the atmosphere and made our hearts dance. Nathkhat, we were taken on a delightful excursion by our dramatic society. Joy and suffering taught us a valuable lesson about suffering versus safar. Novelty, our writing and orating society helped us carry out the whole event smoothly. The anchors brought in a wave of enthusiasm and added to the brightness of the day.

Recent trends in research in Mathematic Education

 Dr. Chandra Tiwari, On 3rd April,2024, The Department of Elementary Education hosted a seminar featuring Dr. Arindam Bose from TISS. It was an insightful session for third and fourth - year students. Students got benefited from this enlightening session on current research directions in mathematics education. The session helped students to delve into topics ranging from ethnomathematics to the creation of thought-provoking questions and the practical application of textbook concepts.

‘Contemporary Concerns in School Education’

Prof Jyoti Raina and Dr Sumanlata also organized a panel discussion on the topic- ‘Contemporary Concerns in School Education’ on 1 February 2024.  The eminent speakers included Dr. Ameeta Mulla Wattal, Chairperson and Executive Director Education, DLF Foundation Schools, Ms. Anuradha Joshi, Principal, Sardar Patel Vidayalaya, and Prof. Manisha Priyam, Department of Educational Policy, NIEPA, and Department of History University of Delhi. A monograph on the same topic by Dr Suman Lata and Prof Jyoti Raina was also released on this occasion.

Astronomy workshop and Museum Visit ( Nehru Planetarium )

Astronomy workshop for the entire department on 26 October, 2023 at the Nehru Planetarium. The workshop was facilitated by Ms Seema Wahi, a storyteller and Ms Prerna, the Assistant Manager at the Planetarium, to integrate science learning with storytelling through immersive experiences and astronomy related activities. This was followed by a visit to the Pradhanmatri Sagrahalaya to develop an understanding of the struggle for independence and development of Indian constitution.
