About the Department

The college started teaching Economics as a discipline of B.A. (Pass) since its inception in 1967. The founder faculty member Ms. V Bala Subramaniam laid the foundation of the department along with Ms. Manjeet Kaur, Ms. Kiran Chopra, Ms. Indu Jairath, Ms. Swaran Bhalla, Ms. Asha Sachdev and Ms. Shobha Mathur. At present the department has ten faculty members. It was under the FYUP that the B.A. (Honours) in Economics was introduced in 2013 and the admission to the very first batch saw an overwhelming response of 500 students in the first cut off and by the time the admissions closed, the department had the very first batch of 254 students, with the rollback of FYUP by the University the course had to be withdrawn. However, under the able guidance and then principal Dr. Shashi Tyagi, the re-introduction of B. A. Hons in Economics under CBCS took place in 2017. Today, we are a department of more than 120 students, 10 faculty members and the department offers B.A. (Honours) in Economics and Economics as a discipline course in B.A. (Programme).

The B.A. (Hons.) Economics curriculum offers a rigorous basis for much of the advanced thinking in the Economics discipline. It provides the students with a logical paradigm for conceptualizing and interpreting the behaviour and interactions of households, firms, government institutions and the rest of the world. The course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of economics. It covers a wide range of subjects, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics, statistics, econometrics, international economics, development economics, and public finance. Through a combination of theoretical lectures, empirical analysis, and case studies, students gain a deep understanding of these subjects. The department also offers some of these subjects as Generic Elective for students of other disciplines.

Our graduates are highly sought after by leading corporations, financial institutions, government agencies, research organizations, and international bodies. The analytical and problem-solving skills acquired during their studies enable them to excel in roles such as economic and research analysts, policy researchers, financial consultants, market analysts, and data scientists, among others. Many of our students have been placed in big 4s, MNCs, banks, government sector and academia. One of star alumni, Ms. Nikita Jain graduated in 2016 ranked fourth in the Indian Economic Service. She presently holds the post of Assistant Director (DMEO) at Niti Aayog.

At Gargi College, we understand the importance of aligning our curriculum with the latest educational reforms. Therefore, our department follows the guidelines provided by the National Education Policy (NEP). The NEP syllabus ensures that students receive a contemporary and relevant education, keeping them abreast of the evolving economic landscape and preparing them for the challenges of the future. We have a dedicated departmental association, Ecomantra, which organizes seminars, workshops, guest lectures, and panel discussions, providing students with opportunities to interact with eminent economists, policymakers, and industry experts. These activities enhance students' understanding of economics beyond the classroom and enable them to develop a well-rounded perspective on economic issues. In addition to the departmental society, our students actively participate in various inter-college competitions, research conferences, and community outreach programs. These initiatives help students develop critical thinking skills, teamwork abilities, and a sense of social responsibility, preparing them to make meaningful contributions to society. The department also publishes an Annual Economics Magazine, Ecobuzz.
