Gandhi Study Circle

About

The Gandhi Study Circle (GSC) of the college was established in 2008 with its teacher convener Dr Sweta Mishra. It aims to revisit, review, and reignite the Gandhian ideals among the youth.  It is a prominent cell not only among all the societies of the college but also of the entire University of Delhi. Here, the students become part of the Gandhian theories and practices. It conducts a number of programmes to make the students aware about the teachings of Gandhi. The circle invites renowned scholars to deliver lectures and talks on various aspects of Gandhi and Gandhian thought with a view to cultivate a deeper understanding among the individuals fostering a just, equitable and sustainable society.

Vision

The vision of the Gandhi Study Circle entails promotion and dissemination of the principles and Gandhian philosophy. It  aims to deepen the understanding of Gandhi’s ideas and inspire the upcoming generations.

As a value adding society in the college, it acts as a active platform for the students to understand Gandhian thought, ideas, and action. In this world of 21st century, the problems here have different solutions and the Gandhian ideology, values are never behind. Gandhi has touched upon a plethora of ideas and issues which can act as hidden treasure for upcoming generations who seek solace in the path of Madhyam Marga.

Mission

a. To educate students and the broader community about Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy and its relevance in contemporary issues

b. To encourage active participation in social and community welfare projects that reflect Gandhian values, such as non-violence 

c. To foster open dialogue and critical thinking on how Gandhian principles can address current societal challenges.

d. To enhance understanding of Gandhi’s impact on history and his contributions to global movements for peace and justice.

e. To educate students about the impact and importance of gandhian ideologies and their relevance in contemporary times.

Society Activities

Activities conducted during the session 2025-26

a) The Gandhi Study Circle proudly launched its first activity under the spirit of the Swachhata Abhiyan, inspired by the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi on August 22, 2025. This cleanliness drive was not just about cleaning spaces but about nurturing responsibility, discipline, and collective action. Starting from the Nescafe area, we aim to transform our surroundings into a cleaner and healthier environment.
Through active participation, geotagged documentation, and teamwork, we had showcase the power of youth in bringing change.

b) The Gandhi Study Circle of Gargi College organized an engaging extempore competition that challenged participants to think and speak on their feet. With topics revealed just 2 minutes prior, the event became a true test of spontaneity, confidence, and clarity of thought.
The competition witnessed enthusiastic participation and insightful perspectives, reflecting the spirit of critical thinking and expression.

c) On the occasion of Hindi Diwas, the Gandhi Study Circle of Gargi College organized a letter writing competition titled "Letter to Gandhi" on 17th September, 2025. The event encouraged students to reflect on Gandhian values and articulate their thoughts through meaningful letters addressed to Mahatma Gandhi. We saw the students engage, introspect and reflect on the Gandhian ideals in real time. The atmosphere was filled with thoughtful expression and a deep sense of connection to Gandhi himself. The event nurtured critical thinking and moral reflection among students, making it a successful event.

d) On 25 September 2025, the Gandhi Study Circle, Gargi college, brought creativity and compassion together through a vibrant painting competition.
Students expressed the timeless values of peace, truth, and non-violence through their art, drawing inspiration from Gandhian ideals.
Each canvas told a unique story, reflecting hope, unity, and social responsibility. The event not only celebrated artistic talent but also encouraged young minds to connect with meaningful principles that shape a better world. It was a day filled with colors, imagination, and thoughtful expression, reminding us all that art can be a powerful medium to inspire change and keep great ideals alive.

e) Gandhi Study Circle of Gargi College organised the Speaker's Session with our esteemed Chief Guest Mr, Himanshu Roy, Professor in JNU, on 7 October 2025 where he englightened us with Gandhi's Relevance in Contemporary India. He culminated Gandhi still survives despite of Genz movement, Bangladesh turmoil and other choke issues that are occurring in contemporary world. The session also discussed how Gandhi's vision of decentralised economy, selt-reliance, and ethical leadership is relevant in the age of globalization and economic disparity. Overall, the session concluded that while Gandhi's ideas may be challenging to practice fully, they provide a moral framework and guiding philosophy for building a more peaceful, just, and sustainable society in contemporary India.  

On 7th October 2025, the Gandhi Study Circle at Gargi College marked a significant milestone with its investiture ceremony. The event celebrated leadership, responsibility, and commitment as Rishika was appointed Convener and Manasvi as Co-Convener. The newly formed team was proudly badged under the Content and Graphics division, symbolizing creativity and collaboration. The ceremony highlighted the spirit of unity and dedication to Gandhian values, inspiring members to contribute meaningfully. With fresh energy and vision, the team embarks on a journey to create impactful work, fostering awareness and expression through thoughtful content and innovative design.

f) On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, 2nd October 2025, the Gandhi Study Circle, along with our esteemed teacher convener and student conveners, had the honour of visiting Gandhi Bhavan at North Campus, University Of Delhi. The session proved to be profoundly enlightening, enriched by insightful deliberations and eloquent addresses that thoughtfully engaged with the life and philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi. The discourse not only deepened our understanding of his enduring ideals of truth and nonviolence but also inspired a renewed sense of social responsibility. It was a truly uplifting and intellectually enriching experience, marking a meaningful and dignified celebration of Gandhi Jayanti.

g) The Gandhi Study Circle of Gargi College, University of Delhi, organized its annual event, Satyanveshan 2026, on 10 April 2026 at the Seminar Hall of the college. The event was designed around the theme "Quest for Truth" and brought together faculty members, invited speakers, judges, and students for a day of academic reflection, dialogue, and policy-oriented engagement.
The programme was structured in multiple sessions, each reflecting the intellectual and social concerns associated with Gandhian thought. The first session was a speaker session titled Satya ki Khoj - Ek Anvarat Jeevan Yatra and featured Prof. Ravindra Kumar, former Professor, Department of History, IGNOU, New Delhi, as the keynote speaker. This session was held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the Seminar Hall and set the tone for the rest of the event by focusing on truth, moral inquiry, and the continuing relevance of Mahatma Gandhi's ideas in contemporary public life.

The second segment of the Annual event was a policy-making competition conducted under the broader title of Satyanvesha. The competition centered on the topic, "Reimagining India through Gandhian Lens: Policies for Sustainable and Inclusive Development." This session encouraged participants to think critically about the role of public policy in addressing present-day developmental challenges while remaining rooted in Gandhian values of justice, sustainability, inclusion, and youth participation. The competition took place on the same day, 10 April 2026, from 12:00 p.m. onwards in the Seminar Hall.
The policy-making competition was evaluated by an accomplished panel of judges comprising Dr. Nitish Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science and Dr. Jyoti Mavi, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics. Their presence added academic rigour and interdisciplinary depth to the proceedings, as the themes of sustainable development and inclusive governance required insights from both political science and economics.

Another important event that took place was the Turncoat competition conducted under the title "Have we misunderstood Gandhi in the modern context?" That had featured Dr. Deeksha Bhardwaj, Associate Professor, Department of History, and Dr. Swati Sweta, Professor, Department of Hindi. Scheduled from 12:00 p.m. onwards at the Seminar Hall, this segment expanded the event's scope by bringing historical and literary perspectives into conversation. Their participation contributed to a richer and more holistic understanding of Gandhian ideas across disciplines.
